"Back to the Basics" ESOP

Back To The Basics

An Employee Stock Ownership Plan, or ESOP, is a retirement benefit that allows employees to become owners of the company where they work. Unlike buying stock on the stock market, employees don’t purchase these shares with their own money. Instead, the company contributes shares into an ESOP account on behalf of eligible employees.

As the company performs well and its value increases, the value of those shares can grow as well. This creates a direct connection between individual effort, company performance, and long-term retirement savings.

The ESOP works much like a retirement account. Over time, employees earn ownership through a process called vesting, which rewards long-term employment.

Each year, an independent valuation determines what each share of the company is worth. The value of an employee’s ESOP account is simply the number of shares they own multiplied by the current share price. When an employee retires or leaves the company, the company buys back those shares, allowing the employee to receive the value they have accumulated.

This means that when everyone works together to make the company stronger, everyone has the opportunity to benefit through the ESOP.
